I've used the search feature (I know that this has been mentioned in the past) but am having no luck. I've also fruitlessly searched for info regarding Essex County's policy... Since paint cans cannot go out in the upcoming bulk pickup, what the best way to dispose of them responsibly?

You can let latex dry out in the can and throw it away with the regular trash. For oil, Essex County has a hazardous waste disposal day in Cedar Grove annually. There's usually something in the paper announcing it as well as flyers at the library. The township could probably also tell you when it's scheduled to take place.

You can also use Waste Paint Hardener to hasten the drying process.

Kitty litter and sand absorb leftover paint. Just put some in each can you have. When we were moving we rented a dumpster and we were told that they would take the paint cans if we did this.

Look for an open dumpster somewhere along Springfield Avenue. Wait Until Dark. Dump 'em. Have a drink.

It's too good to be true. Can someone please confirm that you can throw old dried up paint cans out in the normal trash in Maplewood? I think}} I can clear 1,000 sf if I can do this.

You can let 'em dry out and sneak them into your trash, but sometimes the garbage guys still reject them.

I finally paid for a private pick-up and got rid of them all in one swoop. Freed up the SQ. footage of an entire room for $20 bucks.

Priceless.

The County has a hazardous waste disposal day where they will take solvent based paints. I think it is usually in the late spring. Two years ago it was at the South Mountain Arena on Northfield in West Orange. I didn't go last year, so I don't remember where it was.

There is no bulk pickup in South Orange. There are six Saturdays from spring until early fall which are designated as "container days" at the recycling center. You can bring bulk items to the recycling center on those days. You can also call DPW for an appointment for curbside pick up of large items like old appliances.

You do not have to sneak dried up latex paint cans into the garbage. It is considered solid waste and is supposed to be picked up by your hauler. Oil paint must be recycled.

Do the garbage guys bring a test kit with them to determine oil or latex? I'm going to dry a few out and try a little Maplewood experiment. I'll let you know what I learn.

They will shake the cans to see if it is solid or not. If the cans don't have labels they probably don't have to take them.
