I'm helping a friend with rebuilding her porch and she wants to salvage the old balusters. Unfortunately, we'll need to replace about 40 of them. Getting them turned to match will cost about $35 each. Does anyone know where I could get them done for less? Anything under 100 costs quite a bit. If we could get a similar style and replace the whole porch for less money, I think she'd be happy. As always, thanks for the help. Here's a few shots of the baluster |

Outwater.com. Under the heading Balusters. BAL3X28 seems to maybe be what you are looking for. (I am actually looking in a 2001 book) so the details you find might be different. Good Luck. |

How many ballister if they were all replaced? To be honest I've hand turned them for customers and I charge 40 - 60 depending on how ornate they are and whether they are to be stained. The bases of the ones pictured (left and right of center) are fairly complicated. By way of suggestion can you "isolate" a section of the porch that's not visible (as visible). In other words put all the matching ones where they show. I know its kind of "chump" but maybe hold off on the expense of having matched ones until later ?? just a thought |

Another possibility is to alternate slightly different styles of balusters. I have seen some interior stairs done this way and it can look good.

I checked Jaeger and a few other places like Congdon. None of them match well because of two things: -the circumference of the center of the balluster is wider than most other off the shelf ones -the bases are usually squared off further towards the center, i.e., the bases I see out there are 3-4 inches, instead of the original which is about 1.5-2 inches -the actual length of the original is 24 inches vs 27-28 inches Mark, If you just kept the general shape of the base and didn't make it so detailed, how much less would the cost be? If they looked close enough from 5 feet away, that may work the total # of ballusters is about 120 |

Hi, how long are they and what is the dimension of the base? 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 ? I'm going to assume spruce/pine. I'll need the overall dimensions to be able to give you an accurate price. Another thought......did you see anything at the commercial lumberyards that i could modify to approximate what you want? I could pop it into my lathe for some small adjustments/modifications. To confirm do you need 40 or 120 of them. thx |

Mark, They're 23 1/2 long and the base is 1 7/8. I haven't seen anything that matches, not to say I may have missed something. I'd need about 40 of them Bill |

Give me two days to price out material and I'll get you an estimate. It can take a lot of time per piece. I don't have an automatic duplicator. What would be your time frame? If I could do them as a filler for down time/evenings I could probably give you a decent price. Because they are 1 7/8 I can't just glue two 3/4 pine pieces together. I'll have to use 5/4 pine and/or create a 3/8 piece per ballister. |

I'd probably need them in about a month. Like I said earlier, if I can get them to look close, that should be fine. Specifically, the more ornate work between the square base and the smooth spindle body can be improvised to maybe just look fluted. Not sure if I have the lingo correct.

Sure my cell number is 973-610-3326. I'll do the first for free to work out the best way/hopefully reasonably priced way and then give you an estimate for the other 39? |
