Hi All, We need to find a good floor guy (or girl) to look at some issues that are appearing on our hardwood floor (warping, separation of planks, general sloping that wasn't there when we bought the house 7 months ago). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Did a search prior to posting and did not notice a related topic in the archives, but do apologize if this is a repeat post. |

Not a topic you will get a lot of help with. This is a general problem with older SOM homes. If you really want, I can come and look at the problem, but if it is what I'm thinking, wait until the summer and see if the warping changes. later, George 973 953-0781 |

Is the warping happening to the floor above the boiler or in areas where the steam pipes are (that is, do they feel warm when the heat is on)? Assuming you have that type of heat. |

Shannon--for what it's worth, we've been in our house 7 mos also and I've been seeing the same thing. Guess we'll have to see what the summer brings! While we're on the topic of floors...what do folks use to clean their wood floors? My cleaning lady was using Pine Sol, until I looked at the label and saw it's specifically not recommended for wood. Any recommendations? |

I would definitely wait to see what summer brings. We had a leak on our first floor that caused major warping in the dining room. While dickering over what to do about, we found that after a few months it went away. The floor is certainly not perfect but it is after all 80 years old. As for cleaning - plain old white vinegar diluted in water. Won't harm floors and makes them shine. Just be sure not to slop water on the floors as that can cause more warping. Good luck! |

My guess is that you have what the real estate people call ribbon floors, probably set on a diaganol. These are thinner than traditional floors, are not (usually) tongue and groove and contract more during the low humidity months in the winter. I agree that you should wait and see what summer brings. |
