I have three questions about our sad-looking lawn: 1) Any recommendations for lawn care companies? Ours never got back to us in the fall when we asked about re-seeding, so we're not exactly thrilled with them right now. 2) Now that we've waited until spring to re-seed, is there an optimal window of time to do this? 3) We have lots of brown spots from our big dog peeing on the lawn. Aside from training the dog to use the toilet, is there any way to remedy this? |

Things I learned about seeding. 1. If you do it when the nights are still cold it will take longer to germinate 2. You can do it all summer long and into the fall. 3. If you do it in the summer you need to water it twice a day, every day. 4. The cheap grass you get at HD (scotts) will grow fast but is not as hardy. Spend the money on some good seed from the Mill nursery. It takes longer to germinate but it looks great. That is all I know. |

reseeding should be done in fall. weeds will choke the new grass before it takes root ( according to an extension course instructor ) HD does have some good seed such as Rebel Fescue... apply broadleaf and crabgrass killer during the first week in april for best results if the bag is 20-x-x: the 20 refers to the number of pounds of nitrogen per 100 pounds. so if the bag of fertilizer weighs 50 pounds you have 10 pounds of nitrogen in the bag. use this to determine the amount of fertilizer to spread. That is all I know. |
