Has anyone every stained very basic wood steps--poplar or other similar wood? I'm being told different things from different companies--that they can't be stained because the wood won't hold it and that they can't be painted because it won't look good. But we don't want to carpet them if we can avoid it...any suggestions? Signed, Desperate for Nice Stairs |

Poplar will take a stain. Get some pieces from a lumber yard and experiment. You'll need to clean and sand the wood prior to staining and finishing. 3 coats of poly and you're done. Consider a runner in addition to finishing the stairs. |

Staining poplar is like staing ACQ. Don't waste your time. |

We have a TV unit we purchased unfinished that is poplar and we stained it. It looks fine, but their is no interesting grain. It is kind of bland. |

ceejay; No solutions for you, just empathy because we have the same problem. Personally, I think "bland" and "no grain" is preferable to dirty paint (which is what we have). mj |
