I had Scotts LawnService provide a free analysis of my lawn. They are recommending a service program where they come out for 10 visits from the Spring to Fall and treat the lawn with fertilizer and then aerate it in the Fall. Each visit is $58 for a total of $580. Has anyone used Scotts and would recommend them? Or is it cheaper for me just to go to Home Depot, buy the seed and fertilzer and do it myself? I also saw another post in which someone recommended buying good quality seed at the Mill.

It would be much cheaper if you did it yourself. I beleive you can rent an aerator at HD. It's about $60 a day and you can easily find a neighbor or 2 to split the cost. Really does anyone need 10 applications of incecticde? Check out Jerry Baker's books on landscaping. He has a website and you can find his books in B&N and Borders. He uses whacky combinations of household products to apply to the lawn and garden that really work. I've been using his methods and they seem to work. I also follow the Scotts plan and I ad a bag of grub-ex in the summer so the lawn isn't killed by those pesky bastards. Good luck.:-)

Not sure if it's cheaper than HD, but Metropolitan in W.O. is running a special for purchasing, all at once, all four Scott's seasonal applications (about $68 for 5,000'). And, Scott's better quality rotary spreader is about $44. I can fertilize 5,000' in about 20+ minutes without working up a sweat. BUT, you have to remember to apply each application, which sometimes can be a challenge.
