My water bill for Dec-March of this year showed *nine times* more usage than December to March of last year -- 4600 cubic feet instead of 500. Yet nothing in our usage patterns has changed. I am wondering if this is related to the fact that I've had to refill my boiler several times a week this winter. Could there be a leak of that magnitude that we don't know about ("we" including Gateway, whose been here six times to try and find a problem)? |

Yes. Our bill once tripled because a toilet ran for 2 days. |

I called after recovering from seeing my latest bill. The water company says that the bill represented a catch up on several estimated bills. They hadn't checked the outside meter due to bad weather, etc.

Deborah, I posted something similar about a month ago. They came out found nothing wrong and since then the bills have been back to normal. I think its a sham. The amount of useage that we had for the one month was enormous, something like 4 or 5 times normal. I'll check this months bill just to be sure though. |

I've said it before, I'll say it again: read your utility meters.

If you have steam heat, you could be losing water thru the vents or valves on the radiators. We had several small leaks of steam, but it really was a lot of water |

Amateur Night is not losing water through her air vents, unfortunately. That would've been too easy. As far as the water bill, AN, to fill your boiler from where the low water cut off turns it off to a running level takes about 2 gallons. Considering your shower heads probably pass about 3 gallons per minute, filling the boiler 5 times a week consumes around the same as spending another 5 minutes in the shower over the course of a week. I would think there is another cause to your high water bill. Master Plvmber |

Have you checked to see if there are any original waterlines that were installed under your basement floor? A leak under a concrete slab can go undetected. Typically the culprit is a running toilet though. |

They are also charging more this quarter than they have for the previous three quarters. I am billed quarterly and I was charged 3.79% more per "unit". |
