The paint on my front steps is starting to peel. Does anyone know the process I should follow to fix this? Do I need to strip the paint from the steps before re-painting or can I simply paint over the existing paint (it's only just starting to peel). What kind of paint should I use? |

Are the steps concrete or wood? Basically: 1) Scrape it down as best you can 2) Sand the edges with a #60 sandpaper If Wood: 3) Wood prime the bare areas 4) Paint away with High Gloss/High Enamel paint best used for foot traffic. If Concrete: 3) Concrete Prime the Bare areas (different primer from paint store) 4) Paint away with High Gloss/High Enamel paint best used for foot traffic.

I have painted my wooden steps a number of times over the last 20 years. Definitely prefer wood to concrete steps, but they do take some maintenance. It is the kind of job a novice handyperson like myself can do! SouthOrangeMom |

Thanks for your responses. It looks like it should be easy to repaint. I have a couple more questions: - How often will I have to repaint my wooden steps? (There's only two of us, so foot traffic isn't that heavy.) - The steps get pretty slippery when it snows. Is there something I can do to help with this? (Maybe a particular type of paint, or an additive?)

Our wooden steps get lots of traffic and I paint them every two years (although they'd look better if I did it every year). If you mix in sand with the paint they'll be less slippery. |

Yes, every couple of years. It's not the foot traffic so much as the Rain/Ice/Snow/Shovelling/etc. You can either get the Sand Additive (easily found at the paint store) or by Floor paints with this already-added in feature. No problems there. |

Thanks for all your help. On closer inspection it looks like I'll need to do some work on the porch too (paint wearing away between the steps and the front door.) Time to roll up my sleeves |

The more you inspect, the more you'll realize you have to do....my best advice, stand at the curb, squint a little, and the house will look lovely...Only take on the areas that are glaring at you after the "curb-squint" test. |
