Schneider's Hardware on Main Street in West Orange.

I bought some shutters in the classified's section on MOL and wanted to hang them, not just nail them against my house. I've been searching for the old hinges on line and on e-bay. No luck.

Home Depot only has "simulated hinges" to glue/nail onto the vinyl ones you nail up.

I call Schneider's and the guy not only has a bunch IN STOCK, but says he can get me more on two days notice. Plus he helped me to buy the right kind because the hinge is different for brick vs. wood houses!

They don't take credit cards, so I ran to an ATM, and when I got back he was helping some other customers, so I broused a bit. They have EVERYTHING that you might need for an old house: original stock glass door knobs, old basement utility sink fixtures that are brand new, those black rubber balls that keep a screen door from slamming too hard, you name it.

The best part was, while I was brousing, a woman came in with her daughter to have a key cut. The guy offered to have the girl run the key cutter... "First, you have to wear the safety goggles..." It was how I remembered hardware stores from my youth.

Don't let the Home Depot corporation kill this place, go there for all of your hardware needs. Just don't buy any of the shutter hinges till I'm done with my project.

J.B.

The hinges were $15.99 for a kit that includes hinges for one window. That's two for each side. $4 per hinge -- on line they were like $20-$30 each.

J.B., you got that right!

The Schneider boys are the "who are" of "hardware is"!

(They even have repair parts for "run on" toilets!

Jersey boy -

Another vote for Schneiders - I love them!

I've gone in with weird little hinges looking for a match (crossing my fingers w/out high hopes) they rummage around and pull down some ancient box, blow off the dust and open up like 50 matching doo-hickies c. 1927.

Also they sharpen anything from awls to zithers (something like that) I brought in my gardening tools last year - totally rusty, I'd left the lopers out all winter and I was looking for a miracle. They brought everything back to life and gave me a teensy lecture ("Did you leave these outside all winter or something?")and hints to keep them sharp - a spot of oil and don't leave them outside.

I left them outside all winter again, so it's time to go back.

Plus they have parking!

West Orange has 2 great hardware stores -- the other is on Main Street, between the Police station & Northfield. Its an amazing "hole in the wall" that has nearly anything you'd want (from a hardware store), personal service.

thanks for the tip...tired of settling at Home depot or going online. There's something about being able to see/touch before buying and give my customers more choices. thanks again.

Jersey Boy, thanks for the information. Now we are living in West Orange these stores will be really convenient and hopefully more reasonable than the place in Millburn.

The hardware store on Main Street in Orange, just east of the Orange post office, also is a classic. I was able to find replica bath tub escutcheons for 1930's American Standard faucets.

Bob K -

West Orange has a lot of cool old time-y shops where they actually help the customers - imagine that!

I noticed a Whole Foods is opening next to the K Mart in WO (across from Pal's Cabin)which means that they must have done a lot of marketing surveys and decided that WO fits their demographic - which among other criteria means upscale young families and empty nesters.

WO reminds me a lot of Chicago. It has an old-fashioned feel, there are a lot of neighborhoods with their own pockets of commerce, and near the center of town every neighborhood has it's own laundrymat and tavern.

What's not to love?

Actually, I think Montclair has a lot to do with the Whole Foods opening up at the old Pathmark/Caldor site.

So far things are different, but we kind of enjoy the change. Almost 30 years living in one town became, well, kind of old hat.

Where we are living is off Northfield, near the Livingston border. We back up to Town owned open space land and have been amusing ourselves with the wildlife. The first evening we were here the worlds largest wild turkey took a walk through our yard. We have a chipmunk, Mr. Chips, living under our Bilco door who gets upset everytime we open it. This morning a couple of possums were wandering on the edge of the woods. So far no deer, which I hope continues. As I said, different.

I saw a coyote last year in WO, along with lots of hawks and I think an eagle.

Bob K - Montclair has a Whole Foods already - this WF is specifically for WO - welcome to the new happening town.

Coincidence?

I hope the Whole Foods in West Orange will be like the one in Chatham. Both stores in Millburn and Montclair are too small. Also hope that the one in WO will have a liquor license.

I was passing by the rumored Whole Foods site (corner of Eagle Rock and Prospect) and saw a sign referring to a West Orange Planning Board meeting on January 19th to discuss Whole Foods' building plan. I suppose that counts for progress!

Is there anyone in West Orange who would actually complain about a Whole Foods coming to town?? The sooner this opens the better.

Anyone going to attend and get the scoop?

I don't believe anyone would complain.

A question I ponder is whether or not WO can sustain a Whole Foods. I have been living here almost 3 years and prior to moving here, I believe that location had a Caldor (low end), a dirty Pathmark, and currently has a Kmart (low end).

Will Whole Foods customers coexist with Kmart's?

Maybe if Whole Foods comes here, then maybe Target will follow..... And if I dream bigger, a Starbucks?

How about tearing this old place down and build a new center with more shops and stores!
this area is so ugly.

Folks from Montclair I think would welcome a large Whole Foods with ample parking.

It also seems that there is a growing demographic of New York transplants in WO who may also support Whole Foods. (I hear that the Wendy's will also be shut down/ moved into another location and Whole Foods will take that space as well.)

That whole development should be in for a change. With the recent merger of Sears and Kmart, I believe there are plans for the existing Kmart to be redesigned/ updated as a new-concept Sears store. Agree that the current version there is pretty low-brow.

I wish also that the Ponderosa would be transformed into something nicer. . .

I'd take a WF or a Wegman's, just something nice w/a good selection. I think that people from Montclair & Verona would frequent it, since it's relatively close and has more than 3 parking spaces.

And if Wendy's goes along the way, I'd have to clap!

This hardware store sounds like the old Maplecrest (name?) Hardware that used to be on Springfield Avenue and owned by the Buch famile...It was a sad day for Maplewood when that store closed.

I heard that Wegmans was looking into a site on Rt 10 in East Hanover, but that the town of EH rejected it on the grounds of increased traffic. Can you believe it? Arghghghhhhh!

And the Mayor of East Hanover owns the Resevoir restaurant in South Orange. :-)
