Working on getting my backyard in good shape, so far, I raked out all the junk/dead leaves/Grass from last winter which left lots of bare soil patches all over. I seeded with Scotts Sun/Shade mix (it's sort of shady in our back yard), used Starter Fertilizer+crabgrass control, watered on days it didn't rain, and PRESTO....I have lots of soil patches with clumped up seeds covering it up. It's been 3 weeks now since I initiated the process, and some areas have grown some grass, so I know the seeds aren't broken...but I'm hoping someone can advise me on where to go from here....Thanks!

Smarty,

I've done the same. I think waiting is our next step.

Did you ever hear the expression about watching grass grow?

J.B.

Smarty yah shoulda used starter fertilizer, not the stuff with crabgrass preventer or covered the areas you were going to reseed with plastic when laying down the Scotts. The crabgrass preventer will keep the seed from germinating. Also, seed doesn't germinate until daylight temperatures are at leat 70 degrees.

How do I know this? Been there, done that! :-(

JB, looks like we're in this together...

Bob- The stuff I used was "Starter Fertilizer + Crab Grass prention" recommended for new seeds? Hmmmmm. Second question....one whole section of my yard (a section that doesn't need seeding) has these long stems growing up with little whitish flowers growing on the end, that I have to assume are a type of clover or weed? I can put anything down on that section, because I'm not seeding.....any ideas of what I'm faced with?

I'm DETERMINED to get a great yard going at my house because we've got little ones that I want to be able to run around back there without creating mud. Too many of our neighbors have mud-pits for back yards, and I'd like to avoid that.

Smarty, that is a new one on me. I know using the usual spring fertilizer plus Halts, etc. wouldn't let grass grow. Pray for warmer weather.

You probably have clover. I wouldn't worry about it until the summer. While I know the more ecologically minder here will cringe I have had success spraying clover patches with Ortho Weed and Feed using a garden hose sprayer.

Go see Mark at The Mill. The are a bit more expensive, but he knows his stuff. Using good quality seed and the appropriate fertilizers, etc. is imperative and will be cheaper in the long run. Also been there/done that.

I spoke to someone at Home Depot a few weeks ago that seemed very knowledgeable. He suggested putting down lime 2 weeks ago to improve the condition of the soil and then not putting down seed and starter fertilizer until this weekend (when the temps should be warmer).

The garden center at the corner of Valley and Pierson Rd. Mark is one of the original Piersons who owned the business for one hundred years (something like that). Well, he's not one of the original Piersons. He's not that old. But, he's been there many, many years.; he stayed with the business after his family sold it. He can diagnose any lawn/garden issue that you throw at him.

I just reseeded my entire back yard on Monday. Used a rototiller to till it, then used Scotts Starter fertilizer and Scotts grass seed. I am told to wait on the weed prevention stuff until the grass itself is established, since the weed killers will inhibit the germination process.
