My dishwasher started smoking last night( I noticed it was stuck on the "heat dry" cycle), then I heard a POP. Turned it off ASAP. Not a good sign. A) Is it even worth having someone come look at it? (No idea how old, but not particularly new machine) B) Who should I call for dishwasher repair? Thanks for advice.

Hmm. I don't know the relative prices, but it MIGHT be something simple - that 'pop' doesn't sound encouraging though. I'm sure someone will have a good repair service to suggest, but I think that Sears may be able to come out and take a look. I would first price out a new dishwasher, though, just to balance out the relative cost of a home visit (repair) call vs. just buying a nice new machine. |

Have you looked in the bottom of the washer. Maybe a plastic utensil came in contact with a heating element. I had that happen once and smoke came out. |

We found our dishwasher smoking last year, late in the evening (11 pm). Smoke filled the kitchen, we called the fire dept. Got the kids out of the house. Fire dept. came and took care of it. The motor had caught fire. Thank goodness we noticed it right away and the fire was contained to the immediate area. It was 10 years old. Don't take chances- it was quite scary and happened out of nowhere. Please, please get it checked before using it again. |

Thanks all, the question is whether to have it looked at or scrapped. I'm certainly not using it now. Any other suggestions for appliance repair?

I was once told that some of the worst fires are caused by dishwashers- I think they said particularly from wooden spoons getting caught on the heating element. Pretty scary! |

Norman's Appliance (for service and sales). I think either of these numbers are correct: (908) 273-4262 (973) 564-9050. I've used him for both service and sales. He's a great guy. |

How old is the dishwasher? I'd balance the age of the machine to the repair cost. We had an old one fixed years ago. It was $150 and the machine held on one more year. In the end, it wasn't worth what we paid to have it fixed. |
