I bought a dirt cheap ($125), but lovely empire, mahogany library desk.
I want to put two sinks into it and make it a cool vanity.

Originally, I thought, "I'll top it with marble," but I just
got a price of $785 for that. The point was to save some money, but
have something nice - so the marble/granite is out.

I don't really want glass on top (I have kids).

Can I somehow waterproof the wood?

If I can't do anything, then I still have a nice table, I guess.
Thanks!

Well, even if you spring for the marble, in my book you've got a "bargain". You can always try putting polyurethane on the wood but if this is going to be a vanity your kids use daily I think I'd splurge for the stone top.

You might want to try granite or marble 12" sq tiles. They are very reasonable and would still look nice. Or you could wrap the top with zinc or some other soft metal. I have been known to dumpster dive at the tile stores. You'd be amazed at what you could find.

argh! the tiles woulda been perfect!!!

i just dropped the bundle for the granite.

now, i'm worried the table won't hold the stone at 200 pounds.

always something!
Thanks everyone!
