We are looking to build a deck on our new house and to replace a wall of casement windows with a six foot sliding patio door (space doesn't allow a swinging door). There are no pipes in the wall and only one electric outlet. The deck will be about 200 to 240 square feet (10 or 12 x 20) and about three feet above grade. We need one staircase, probably four feet wide, to the yard. We can live with ACQ decking, but would like railings that look a little more like porch railings than the typical deck. Any suggestion on contractors who can handle both jobs and a ball park on cost?

Bob K.,having read many of your replys in this section,I was surprised to read your current post as I always thought you were somehow,at least peripherally[?],involved in the trades.Remember with the new ACQ,you must use either stainless fasteners or a triple galvanized like Z-Max.The data is not all in as to exactly how much more corrosive the new stuff is so I would err on the side of caution and go with stainless steel.30$/sq. ft.?Maybe 24$ sq. ft.? |

Bob K, I thought I read that you are moving, no? If so, why are you doing this work? You will not get your money out of it so just sell as is and go IF that is the case. If you want, I will pop over and bid it. If you want to see the exact job, call, and I will show you how I did it on my house. Why not french swing out doors? They look great and solve the problems. The deck height has to be set correctly so you can open on a snow day. later George, with the big thumb 973 953-0781 |

George H, lol. Nope I am not in the business, just a veterean of nearly thirty years owning antique houses and a big fan of the DIY channel. Jgberkeley, I will be calling you next week. I thought about an outswing door, but I think a slider would work better for us since we will also be using it for ventilation and to keep Mrs. K's plants happy.

I am considering similar but with stone patio (also with 4 steps down to accomodate slight slope) Any recommendations on where to get good quality swing-out french doors? I was considering getting an estimate from Pella but appreciate other recommendations. Do you have recommendations for installation (when it involves breaking wall with windows). |

I would recommend Pella. I have installed several Pella outswing french doors including one on my home. While I install them, Pella does have certified Pella installers which you might consider. Later, George |

Thanks George. What is your experience with Pella. Can you negotiate with them on prices for either the products or their installation? |
