They are not bees but Wood Hornets - I sprayed their little holes at night with an industrial strenght insecticide - then went back the next day and used wood filler and filled the holes - sealed with primer and paint.

They are not Wood Hornets, and I doubt they are Horntails, also known as Wood
Wasps. My bet is they are Carpenter Bees. Check out this website and you'll learn more than you ever wanted, including how to get rid of them. (They also have an extensive article on Wood Wasps, if you're curious.)
