What's a fair price to pay for replacing broken/missing roof slates -- with and without customer provided slates? (I recently was quoted $25 per slate, labor only, by an MOL-endorsed roofer.)

If its say 10 slate all in the same area @ $25/each and it's just labor, the slater is making very good money since he'' be there for the most,1 1/2 hour. If they are throughout the entire roof and the roof is not walkable, he may break even. I never quoted per slate. Always based on time. It's the only fair way for everyone all around. For a fully insured mechanic, 75.00 / hour or $525.00 / day. If he has a helper, then that's extra.

Also another thought. Slate aren't cheap. They weigh a lot per square and they have to be trucked in and freight costs are high. The only local supplier in the area that carries slate plays up that fact and really rapes contractors, but hey, he's convenient and has stock and the price is passed on to the customer.

Upondaroof ,
Do you repair slate roofs ? You seem to know something about slate roofs . I have been looking for an honest , reliable , fair priced roofer for a long , long time .

sally, yes I do slate, but I'm retiring next month. I've been doing a one man op since '97 when I let my crews go down the road, but every year gets harder and less work comes in and it's time to let it go. Even took a part time job.
Any of the above mentioned slaters should work out for you, with Glenn and Adams being more personalized since the owners work on the jobs. My great grand father worked for Steifel, so they go back a bit!

Good luck and if I can answer a question or two, give me a shout.

Glenn, highly endorsed on MOL, quoted $25 per slate (labor only), PLUS cost of slate. Broken/missing slates are scattered, but only 2-3 are in difficult to reach/higher locations.
