Travis are you refferring to the Fibrex Window?

HOMMELL I would rather Pl them to you as they are not finalized nor decided but it has to do with product failure.

Michael K. Mc Kell I would just caution all those who want it, this is still more of a maintenance item than all the vinyls, and less than wood.

Arnold, fibrex is a wood-plastic composite that Anderson sells. I was thinking of say Marvin Infinity, Mildgard Ultra or Pella Impervia. Marvin Integrity is a wood contractor window with FG cladding.

The purported advantage of FG over aluminium cladding is lower conductivity and less expansion/contraction (the latter of which may lead to air leaks and moisture intrusion). The advantage of FG over vinyl is again less expansion/contraction, which is much worse for vinyl.

I understand there are some very well engineered vinyl windows out there (Schuco, Quantum2, Vinyltek), but I'm not sure I trust the material long term in a world of global warming. OTOH the engineering of the current crop of FG windows seems just okay, unless there's a really good Canadian company I haven't heard of.

Hey sounds like you are doing your homework on windows, what I am wondering is why so much emphasis is being put on the frame (10%) of the window and so little on the glass (90%) never mind the warranties, guarantees etc. I always caution new products, especially ones that distract you as a consumer from what really matters. As far as Cladding in aluminum, vinyl, fiberglass or anything for that matter, cladding is just the exterior covering and CAN NOT transfer heat or cold. Has nothing to do with heat transfer or loss, nor does it contribute to glass SEAL FAILURE which most companies do not warrant very long.

Thermal expansion rates:

Glass 8.7

Wood 0.0 (expands with humidity)

Aluminium 23.0

Vinyl 62.0

Fiberglass 7.4

That translates into about 1/32" expansion in a -30F to 70F temperature range for a 6' FG window stile, vs 1/4" for a 6' vinyl window stile.

Let's say that's 1/8" for a 3' vinyl stile, 0F to 100F. That is a significant differential between glass and vinyl. I don't see how you don't get air leakage eventually with that kind of differential movement of the materials.

I know the spacer is the weak link in any window. My dream window is foam-filled fiberglass, or wood clad with fiberglass for aesthetics, with a TPS spacer and Krypton filler.

Someone tell Schuco.
