P&P. Next to the hobby shop on Springfield Ave. Probably just needs a good tune up and blade sharpening. :-)

Those guys are great. Before you lug the whole darn thing in, though, you may want to consider these simple things:

1. change the spark plug
2. change the air cleaner
3. change the oil
4. If that doesn't work... drain the gasoline and put in fresh
5. If THAT doesn't work, then you'll need to bring it in.

Getting the blade sharpened every 1-2 years is a great idea, as previously mentioned.

You should never store gasoline inside the mower (it goes bad, believe it or not). For short term storage, you can buy a "fuel stabilizer" that will help with the problem (known as 'varnishing', I believe).

Even if you just plop your mower down at P&P and say "fix it", you'll be a LOT better off than if you were to purchase a brand new mower!

If you buy a new one, go for a manual push mower:-) Much easier to take care of.

thanks guys. case, we'll follow those instructions & then possibly bring it over to p&p & see what they say. if it does need a tune up, how much might that run? (it's a manual push mower.)

Hi Taam. I meant the kind that doesn't run on gasoline.

taam -

The steps that case outlines above is exactly what P&P will do as a tune up for around $60.

Actually, $60 is pretty good! The plug and air filter should be under $10, the oil is just a few bucks... they'll sharpen the blade (if you bring it to them) for $10, I think.

Semi funny story that makes me look like an idiot.

When we moved I decided to start taking care of the lawn because I could use the exercise and with the kids out of the house I had to find something to occupy my time now that my weekends are no longer an endless round of soccer, lacrosse, baseball and softball games. OK, I bought the mower, read the instructions and the first time I fired it up everything was fine. A week ago I couldn't start the friggin' thing. I checked the spark plug, the airfilter and added stabilizer to the gas. Still wouldn't start. Put it away cursing and mumbling under my breath. I woke up in the middle of the night and realized the reason it wouldn't start was that I hadn't opened the gas valve.

Repeat after me, "Bob is a dumbass" :-)

P&P picked up my lawnmower in S.Orange, did a full service (all noted above) and delivered my lawnmower back to my driveway for $99.60 total.

Well worth it IMO re: back-savings and safety (we don't have a pickup truck).

FYI, my Toro lawnmower was one season old and wouldn't start without serious man-power (Toro's are guaranteed to start on the 1st or 2nd pull). They discovered that the primer wasn't working and repaired it under warranty.

Use stabilizer at the end of the season, not the beginning. Gas gums up over months of disuse. This is probably the problem here. I have a non-working snow blower because of this.
