The house we are buying has butcher block countertops that don't appear to be in great shape (lots of stains). I suspect they have not been maintained properly. Is this something that can be easily remedied? I've read a bit about butcher block on the web and it sounds like the thing to do is sand them with very fine sandpaper and oil them. Sounds easy enough but has anyone actually done this? Thanks in advance.......... |

I can't address really old, stained butcher block, but we have a two-year old butcher block counter. We abuse it to death. Strawberry juice, grape juice, coffee, you name it, it's sat on it. Every couple months, TS rubs it down with mineral oil & lets it sit overnight. The stains come right up & the wood is beautiful. For old stains, you may have to do the light sanding. But the oil doesn't take long at all; about 5 minutes. She does it before we go to bed at night & in the monring it is all absorbed. |
