In order to fence in my backyard, what steps do I need to take? My gut tells me I need to get my property line marked off in some way. Is this done by a surveyor? the town? Thanks in advance for any experience/suggestions.

You need to take your survey(which you received when you purchased the house) to the town to ask for a permit. The fence installer will use this survey to make sure that the entire fence is within your property. The nicer side of the fence faces your neighbors. |

We had a side house fence installed about two years ago by Tom Kushner (908-272-5692). He asked for our survey and took it from there. Tom did a great job and even installed two beautiful gates on our deck with locks for kids/dogs. |

Also, check with the town about the length and height of your fence. There's a specific ordinance about fences and their size. bklyngirl |

I used Artistic Fences in Montclair they were good. The only quirk I have is that 5 years later the ceder posts are starting to splinter, therefore the posts may need to be of a harder wood that will stand up to the elements a little better. |
