In the home we are moving into, most of the windows have recently been replaced. The basement windows were not included in this and they are not only old, but cracked and will not latch properly. This is leading to insulation issues, obviously, and lots of little bugs getting into the basement. I want to replace about 5 basement windows. They are typical basement windows with the latch. I don't need high quality windows because, hey! they're in the basement after all. I just want ones that work. I also want to hire someone to install these windows. Any suggestions? I don't think Pella or Andersen are necessary and don't want to be charged an insane amount for basement windows. Is this something Home Depot will do? Thanks in advance for experiences and suggestions! |

Hey There I used a local Maplewood company called Tru-Thermal and they were done really professionally for relatively cheap. (I think about $250 a window) Good Luck Cmagg |

I believe Tru-Thermal is out of business. Any good handyman can replace these windows for you. |

I'd stay away from HD; they sub-contract out and many people on this board have been unhappy with the experience. Whatever you do, the most important thing is to make sure that the measurements are correct. |

There used to be a place in Union which did this. It was off the Sty Ave, down that street with the median. It was sort of at the exit of what used to be Toys R Us. For some reason I can't recall if they are still there, but they installed the basement windows for us and, more importantly, installed the security bars. It is so easy to go behind the hedge, bust out one of those small quiet window panes, and get into the house. Worse still if you have those old metal ones from the 1920's, more than once the meter readers were unlatching them so thier friends could break into the house. You want to have a nice custom security bar installed. They did them at that place in Union. -John |

At $60/window, I would say you're better off with plastic sheeting and a hair dryer. Maybe more effective at sealing air leaks, and self-installation is easy. |

I agree with Travis. You're not going to get a decent window for that price. Plus it doesn't sound like for the price of your install you'd be getting a licensed and insured contractor.

To all who post their services on MOL. You are dealing with savvy homeonwers who check insurance, licenses and references. Also, the Village of S.O. requires all who do contracting work to get a license from them. Do not waste your time posting unless you can provide this. You are dealing with savvy, intelligent homeowners who check these things. Sherri Honey Do List LLC |

Thanks all. Was a little too eager in my post (it's the cowgirl in me!). I assure you, I'm more cautious in real life.
