Ok, I shattered a pyrex dish and a lot of the glass went down the garbage disposal and now it won't run. I guess the larger pieces of glass (or pieces I didn't get out) have clogged the disposal. Anyone know how I can fix this?

If you haven't run it yet, try vacuuming it out. Make sure it is completely dry & turn the circuit breaker off. I don't know why; just seems like a logical thing to do, sticking an electric appliance down there. Oh, wear rubber sole shoes just in case. Best scenario, use a wet vac.

I am sure that someone will have a better idea and say that mine is the dumbest thing they've ever heard.

But, sadly, it's what I would try first.

If greenie's plan doesn't work, call Norman for appliance repair, or try opening up the disposal under the sink (or call rescue squad, as the case may be).

Quoting Wendy from an old thread: Norman's Appliance (for service and sales). I think either of these numbers are correct: (908) 273-4262 (973) 564-9050. I've used him for both service and sales. He's a great guy.

Norman has fixed our dishwasher and washing machine; prompt, friendly, good work, reasonable prices.

I don't know about all brands but assume they are similar: you should find a hex socket in the center of the bottom side of the disposal. The disposal comes with a hex wrench that is used to turn the motor in reverse when it is stuck using this socket. Once the motor turns, remove any remaining glass and give it another try.

There is also a reset button on the bottom of the disposal that may need to be pushed.

If you don't have this wrench you can get a new one at HD or Lowe's.

You're right gj1, it does have a hex socket. I'll have to try HD for a hex wrench. Thanks.

(tried the reset button, no good. You can here it come on but grinder won't turn.)

Greentree,

Where were you when I was getting it for trimming my hedges with an extension cord plugged into a non-grounded plug using an adapter.

I was the sole voice of craziness. I could have used some back up against the GFCI wimps.

J.B.

I'll bet the vacuum would have worked too.

Nice one Greentree!

Actually I don't have a water vacuum or a vacuum with a hose or I might've tried it.

Buy a cheap shop-vac from Home Depot. They come in handy from time to time.
