I held off getting a water softener for two years, ever since I moved to SO -- it just bugged me too much to pay for the crappy water PLUS the water softening system. Now I am kicking myself. I've had the Portasoft water softener for about a week now, and I can't believe the difference. Dishes and glasses look noticeably clearer, the water feels great on my skin when I bathe, and the laundry comes out cleaner. Total cost was $190 to install plus $25 a month to lease it and $70 a year (delivered) for the salt. Their number is 908 233 4300. Only down side was the unit size -- much bigger than I thought, almost as big as the hot water heater. But totally worth it!

Portasoft are great.... It makes all the difference having them take the salt downstairs rather than breaking my back doing it! And yes, you are right, a water softener is a necessity in this area - I was at risk of having to replace my 14 month old dishwasher due to the build-up caused by our water!!!!! |

Portasoft. Don't you see their "little houses" at construction sites, for the carpenters' delicate tushies? |

I also can't take the godawful water here any more and also have been putting it off due to resentment about the whole situation. And the SO village web site has the audacity to claim our water quality is rated "excellent" (no source attributed though)! I'm curious if you or PortaSoft tested for other contaminants in your water such as chlorine, lead, etc before deciding to go with a softener rather than a whole-house filtration system?

Nope.... haven't checked for all that. Portsoft come and do a test which shows how hard your water is (I think mine is very hard) and based on that and the fact that our 13-14 month old appliances were about to break down because of the water/build up, we got the softener. We also have a Pur water system that we use for drinking water, but I know that Portasoft do something there too. I have been trying to find out about our water situation. I have been making calls and even spoke to one man who said that a lot of the water sources are "contaminated" (This was the word he used, please don't jump on me, he said that he lives "next door" to a very contimanated water source)but when it comes into the houses it has gone through all these systems etc and is then "good".... He went on to say that the majority of the yucky stuff that people might see in their water is due to the pipes, not the water...... That doesn't make me feel any easier... |

I drank some, it has a "taste" but it's not salty so I would imagine it's the water itself, not the softener. We put this water into our Pur water filter thingy and I tasted that too, it taste very different. I would cook with the water coming out of the faucet, I use it in my coffee maker etc as that has a filtration system, but I would never drink it "straight" as it doesn't taste good enough.

I drink it all the time and it tastes okay to me -- not that I am a water aficionado by any means. |
