I've seen big clumps of purple flowers around - they look like a cross between heather, lavender and salvia. I'm not sure what they are, but I like them and I want some in my front yard. THey are currently in bloom - and I seem to recall that, last year, they bloomed until fall - what are they? Neither heather or lavender are in bloom yet and they only bloom for a month? Some kind of Salvia?

Also, if anyone can recommend a short bush or perenial that that I can put in front of my boxwoods in front of my house, I would be grateful. It has to be deer resistent - and full sun. Does anyone have experience with dwarf deutzia?

Thanks.

I think its Salvia. I saw it at Lowe's.

Is it this?

I could be wrong, but I love it, too.
Good luck

They could be dianthus or sweet alyssum. Where have you seen them? I'll drive by and investigate and report back.

There is a house on Glen View in South Orange, just off of South Orange Avenue. There is also a store in Livingston on Livingston Ave/JFK down a few doors from Calabria. Both a bit far from Maplewood, so no need to go out of your way, but thank you. My only thoughts on sweet alyssum is that it isn't blooming yet, is it? And the flowers that I am talking about bloomed spring, summer and fall last year. I'm really thinking salvia, but I could be wrong.

I can't think of anything that resembles both lavender and salvia (spikes) and heather (mat-forming).
Nor can I think of anything that blooms from NOW into fall! That would be a pretty amazing performance, even for an annual.
I hope someone solves this mystery, because I am going to want some of this plant!

my salvia is blooming now. It is is a tall, clumpy bushy thing. With spikes. Smells like cat piss when you rub leaves. It will continue to flower all summer if you deadhead it immediatedly after the blooms die.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to get some salvia this weekend. I think that's what it is.

Salvia is great. Look for May Night - constant bloomer with deadheading throughout the summer.
PS Like most herbs, deer don't touch it.
