I was wondering what people tip someone who does a job in your house (painting, plumbing, carpentry, etc.). Do you very depending on whether it is the person’s own business or whether they work for a company? Do you give a percentage of the overall price? Thanks!

I don't think you're supposed to tip the owner of a business. I usually try to tip the crew if they're doing a good job... don't forget things like water, soda, etc - sometimes the 'intangibles' are more important than the cash. |

ENOUGH with the tipping.....painters, plumbers, carpenters are quite well paid in this area. They do not expect tips; that's more of a Manhattan thing where everyone has their hand out. |

Carpenters don't expect to be tipped. I'd be surprised if a plumber or painter did. Don't do it. It's their employer's job to pay them adequately. A handyman may be another issue, however...don't know about that. |

Why would a handyman be any different from a plumber or painter? |

I've done this work in three capacities: worker, middle management, boss, for more than two decades and can count on one hand the times I've been tipped: Once by a tenant of the homeowner in the West Village, the odd bottle of wine now and again.... I don't know how many times I've heard, "At the end we'll have a party and all the workers will be invited". It actually happened twice, and each time was truly awesome. What I think most of us service providers appreciate most, though, are the little things. Soda. Water. Iced tea. Prompt payment. Courteous treatment. You can't go wrong with those. |

Great insight Longheadself. Thank you. We had remediation guys out for a couple of days (cleaning sewage out of our basement) and we provided drinks and ordered pizza both days (nice guys, dirty job). They seemed very appreciative. For longer jobs (we have one coming up in the fall) I plan to provide a cooler of drinks (every day) and pizza on Fridays. |

Aha! I win! don't forget things like water, soda, etc - sometimes the 'intangibles' are more important than the cash. Where's my "I was right" prize? |
