We're thinking of making changes in our kitchen (e.g. removing some pine paneling from the walls) but would like to consult with someone knowledgeable in updating old kitchens while retaining the character of the place. We're not sure whether we'd need a contractor, an architect or an interior designer to advise us whether our ideas are suitable. Could anybody refer us to the right person?
Thank you.

Clawson Architects. They are very sensitive to the historical details and character of the house. They've done some beautiful kitchens in the area 973-313-2724.

Thanks, Czele. I checked out www.clawsonarchitects.com and get the impression that they might be a little too high end for us. It seems to me like architects are hired to envision brand new kitchens, not to make slight changes to old ones. Is that right in your experience?

The best person to talk to about a kitchen is a kitchen designer. A kitchen designer can recommend the other trades(architect, structural engineer, restoration specialists, interior designers etc.) which meet your requirements as necessary. You can find kitchen designers in your area at www.nkba.org.
The National Kitchen and Bath Association website. The best reference you can get is from a homeowner who is either in the process of completing a kitchen or one who has just done so. The kitchen designer can take you to a job in your area which fits this criteria. Remember everyone's standards may not be your standards.
Good Luck!

Try Antoinette Frasier, of The Complete Kitchen. She's listed, here in South Orange. I haven't used her but my husband has seen her book and it looks pretty good.

Thanks Kitchenguru and Shanabana for the suggestions. We'll definitely contact Complete Kitchen. I've also searched the archives for other recommendations. Mike at Xcel seems like a favorite with several families. Could one of you send me his contact info?

Also, once we get to the stage when we want to pick out what tile, what floor etc., where is a good place to go? I got Central Bath & Kicthen in Orange off the archives. Any other suggestions?
