Took a shower Friday morning, left for the weekend, and this morning no water comes out of the shower although my tub, sink, and toilet all work (shower is not connected to tub). It is as if someone turned off the valve to the shower. Any ideas? |

check the valve that's a strange one. I would guess that the shower control handle is broken or you have a blockage in the showerhead. Start with the showerhead, take it off and then turn the water on. If nothing comes out, then it may be the handle mechanism. Some of the parts are plastic and may have broken. STart taking that apart (but be sure to turn of the water first) or call a plumber |

Assuming the handle (or handles) turn and feel the same as before it has to be some sort of blockage. I would start with removing the shower head and then work my way down to the facucet(s). It sounds like you have old plumbing, with separate controls for the shower and the tub. |

Mike, are you new to SO/Maplewood? I'm asking because we have had this happen numerous times since moving to SO. Calcium deposits build up and clog the showerhead. If that's your problem, you have to unscrew the nozzle and clean out the calcium deposits. I hope that is all it is. |

handygirl, how do you know it is calcium build up? my plumber didn't know what it was in the shower head, but he sent if off to be analyzed. he said the results would be back in about 3 weeks. I can't believe i'm the only one in south orange with this problem. i'm surprised my plumber acted puzzled. He's been in the business a long time. |

The water in SO is getting worse by the day. It was not always as bad as it is becoming. So, Crazy_quilter, perhaps plumbers have never seen anything like this but they're potentially going to see a lot more of it in the future. I was going to suggest the horrible water clogged the shower head up that quickly as a joke -- but I guess in SO where water quality is concerned, the joke is on us.

The calcium build-up in our shower looks like little light blue chaulky beads about the same size as a small crumb or pin head - small, but big enough to clog the holes in the shower head. Unscrew the shower head and tap the calcium beads out. Should work fine once the holes are unclogged. |

Are crumbling dip tubes still a problem with hot water heaters? For awhile many people were mistaking those particles for calcium deposits. I think the problem was with dip tubes produced in the late 90s. If the particles are calcium, they will disolve in vinegar. |
