We're redoing a bath with shower. Tub is clawfoot, shower will have 360 curtain, but will be a shower used by kids (clawfoot fits dimensions/window config. better than standard). Contractor bid stating he will use Hardibacker under the floor tiles (good). Walls will be wood wainscoting, not tile. Contractor says he'll use "purple board" for walls and ceilings, called it the new green board. Anyone know anything about purple board? Started reading up on Hardibacker and thought it might be worthwhile to do whole bath with hardibacker. Anyone have a sense how much more that should be than with greenboard? Thanks.

Go to Georgia Pacific website and read up on Densheild Tile Backer.I use it almost exclusively behind tile installations on walls in conjunction with cement board or Hardi-backer on floors.I would personally be leery of using any paper faced product in a bathroom as they have been shown to promote the growth of mold. There are some micro-biomed materials out there but I don't have any point of reference concerning them. |

Could he possibly mean blue board which is used under a 3 coat plaster job? |

Thanks, George. I thought that might be the case, as I had a very hard time finding any ref to purple board. Eventually I found this: http://www.wbdg.org/productguide/productpage.php?p=25 Describing purple board as National Gypsum's XP high impact wall board. It says water resistant and recommended for schools, etc - stronger than normal wallboard, but doesn't seem to push it as a bathroom application. The Hardibacker site led me to believe you could put it all over - ceilings, walls - in addition to floors. |

Went on the site.Sounds pretty good.Cant seem to find how long product has been on the market, web site was updated 8/05.I'm more partial to products with a track record or am willing to settle for the old tried and true.Hardi backer would not be my choice for anywhere that was not getting tile.I'd be more inclined to use 1/2" ply behind the wainscot from a nailing veiwpoint, but anytime you use wood in a moisture prone enviorment attention to detail is important as well as proper prep and more importantly, proper finishing materials. |

Check this out: http://www.gp.com/build/product.aspx?pname=DensArmor?%D1%A2+Plus+Interior+Wallbo ard&pid=4659&hierarchy=pc Georgia Pacific this year introduced DensArmor. It's paperless wall board that is meant for residential bathroom use. It will not support mold or mildew growth, and has to be one of the best new products I've seen in awhile for this application. |
