I planted two of these last fall and they survived the winter. They are losing leaves, which I attributed to transplant shock. Now, there are some very fast growing stalks coming out of the top of it, but the bottom remains leafless. What is happening?

We had a similiar problem last year. Pierson's said they needed iron which they sell and we applied and it helped. Run it by them.

Most Hollies lose their leaves this time of the year.

I have a very leggy holly. It has some leafeless stalks with bushy fast growing ends. The lower clump still has its leaves, but is very reluctant to grow. I'll try the iron.

I don't have a variegated holly, but mine did begin life as a leggy plant. I cut half of it back last Spring and have been trimming wayward branches. It's improved quite a bit.
