Called Tree King for the third (and last) time today. They haven't come out yet and it's been about 3 weeks since my first call. They received lots of praise on an earlier thread, but I'm giving up hope here. (They're the guys out of Kenvil, right?) Anyway, do you know anyone else who is good, careful getting around gardens and such, and reasonably priced? I have a very large oak that, unfortunately, must come down, and maybe even another tree or two--plus it's time for some general trimming/thinning of the rest of the trees. I'd appreciate your thoughts, especially as I don't want to have to break the bank on this one. Thanks.

We've always been happy with Maplewood Tree Service.

We've had great experiences with Friendly Tree Service. (I don't have their number handy.)

They trimmed a giant Maple in our backyard and last summer we had what we thought might be termites or tree-eating ants of some sort in it. The owner came out and spent a good 30 minutes with us telling us what they were (harmless ants, it turned out) and that there was no need to do anything. Didn't charge at all for that visit and the time he spent talking to us about our trees.

I'll re-post tonight if I come across their numbe.

On the topic of trees, approximately 2 trees on my property have a lot of vines growing on them and I hate the way they look. Would any one of these tree service companies remove the ivy? Or, is this a job for my landscaper?

Bklygirl,
How large are the vines? If you just want to kill the vines you could just cut them off around the bottom... that way the tree would not be suffocated over time. The vines will still stay on and those are a pain to remove... I'm no expert but have tried pulling parts of them out and from the look of it, ripping the vines out may cause damage to the tree because the vines' roots seem to sink into the tree trunk.

I did it for my tree where I just cut off the vines near the roots... over time the leaves of the vines will just fall off and the tree still looks healthy.

Dude:

The vines are huge! They go all the way up the trees.

I don't want to damage the trees, so I'll do a bit more research before I do anything.

Thanks!

Always get quotes... but I liked Frank's Tree Service for my removal.

Bklyngirl,

Sounds like the vine will be tough to remove for aesthetic reasons. I'm no expert but if the vines are huge you may want to kill them just be cutting off their supply of water from the roots... again just cutting a small section would do the job. My tree was noticeably leafier and healthier after I did that.

I'll give it a shot and report back.

Thanks, again.

Try Tree-Tech out of Short Hills. We received about four estimates and theirs was half the price of most. We had vines climbing up three trees on our property and they removed all of them and did a great deal of pruning for very reasonable cost. The main office number is 973-895-8930.

I called maplewood Tree and Friendly's 2 weeks ago and got estimates from both immediately. (Similar pricing)
