Based on recs on this board I had Jack Williams give me an estimate for chimney repair work (we have a leak that's bubbling plaster in our bedroom). The son comes out a few weeks ago pokes around and gives me an estimate for $1400 to spot repoint, replace the concrete on the top, silicone waterproof, caulk between the house and chimney, redo the flashing and a few other small things. This morning they arrive to do the work and the foreman guy looks at the chimney and says spot repointing isn't going to solve the problem, the back of the chimney above the roof is falling apart and it's his opinion that the whole top half of the chimney need to be rebuilt. They won't start the work and Jack Williams will be here in an hour to discuss the options with me.

I feel like I'm being scammed but aren't these guys supposed to be reputable??????
Grrrrr - I'm furious!

See what the new cost is going to be. Maybe the foreman did see something that was missed in the orginal inspection. If you are concerned then, maybe the approach would be to tell them you are uncomfortable and send them home. Good luck.

At the very least, you need a second opinion. I certainly would not agree to anything without at least one other (reputable) company examining your chimney.

I don't know this company, but your description of what has happened doesn't pass the smell test, IMHO, and I wouldn't trust them at all.

Had you gotten estimates from others? Did Williams physically inspect the chimney or look from the ground? If he did actually climb up for a look see, and if what the foreman is saying is true, then you might just want to send everyone home and start over. If he just looked from the ground, (even with field glasses) there's probably no way he could have known about the back side since he couldn't see it. This also doesn't make him look good, but listen to what he has to say and maybe send him home until you get additional quotes. Not a good situation for either party.
