I am having a new roof put on now and there is a big crew, and obviously it's costing big bucks. Is it customary to tip?? The crew, the crew leader? I'm leaning toward no tip, but I'd like some opinions please

No tipping imo. Maybe run out and buy some drinks or a couple of pizzas if you feel like giving them something.

We don't tip contractor crews anymore. We provide drinks (a cooler full on longer jobs in the warm weather) and lunch.

I say, no tip. They're being paid by the roofing contractor. I agree with Greenetree et al. Give them the courtesy of cold drinks, maybe some food, but tipping is unnecessary.

Jeeze, what a bunch of skints you guys are! 39 years on the roof and I can count on one hand, the number of times I or the crew was tipped and it was usually a fiver or ten spot to buy coffee. Ixnay on the ippingtay.

Where is the HUMANITY??? Hey if a guy is working hard roofing your home, and they are neat, clean and courtious, they really do appreciate when someone offers at the end of the day to give them a personal thank you. A tip can be drinks, pizza or coffe, but that is as they are working. There is nothing wrong (IMHO) with offering a 50 or 100 dollar tip to the foreman if he did his best to accomadate you. Remember they do not work in a profit sharing enviornment. I recently had Concrete Concepts at my home doing a large stamped concrete job, I tipped each foreman as they were very easy to communicate with they where extremely polite and believe me I am not an over generous person.

We have no problem offering a 15-20% tip to a waiter, or waitress who just writes down our order and walks 15 paces to set it on our table. What about people that are working on our prized possesion is 1% too much too ask if 100% satisfied?

Again IMHO

Any work that we have had done, we have given a good tip to the workers at the end. I also make sure that dependant on the weather they have plenty of hot or cold drinks, and get pizza etc for lunch and fruit. I KNOW they get paid, but I don't know how much, and so far we have always had amazing work done.

Maybe we have just been lucky, but everyone that we have had here has done a stellar job.

We decided to go the pizza/soda route. They definitely appreciated it, but I bet they would have liked a tip instead. There were 10 guys and it was just a bit too much to lay out, especially since the roof broke the bank anyway. I'll be posting our wonderful experience with this roofing company.
