Other thoughts for stools other than Pottery Barn and other mall stores?

If you aren't against mail order try Home Decorators, they have catalogues or website.

Bowery, a few blocks above Houston (& just above the the lighting district) is the restaurant supply district - many types of stools at good prices.

jeffl - we were having the same problem finding good, reasonably priced counter height stools (with backs). We were at capitol lighting in E. Hanover and decided to pop into Pier 1 just for kicks and we found a set of counter height stools to our liking. They are dark wood and have leather seating surfaces and are quite comfortable. I think they also have a suede covered model, but since we have a small child the lighter color wouldn't have lasted very long. They come in both bar and counter heights.

I think you can view them here:

I went to BB&B for a "temporary" solution until I could make up my mind. Armed with a stack of 20% coupons (it's against my religion to shop there without), I ended up with $64 dollar padded counter stools with backs. They are comfortable, have held up for two years and I've had so many compliments on them that I have no plans on looking for "permanent" ones until they die.

When I was looking last year I couldn't believe how expensive they could be!

I found lots of websites...overstock.com had a nice selection. I ended up ordering them from Costco.com and I like them. They were sold in pairs. Ours are adjustable in height which is great with small, medium and tall people in the house.

If you like modern furniture, try Design Within Reach -- www.dwr.com. A little pricey, but excellent quality and style.

Westco on route 10.
Ballards catalog.

I love the Home Decorator's catalog, but they have the absolute worst customer service. I will never order from them again.

target.com has good prices and a pretty big selection.

We bought ours from Pottery Barn (on sale) and we're very happy with them.

Hey Just My 2 Cents, I found a awesome secret it's a place located in the Menlo Park Mall. I do not remember the name but found there prices to be HIGHLY negotiable, ther service to be great (I had 1 problem) and there products are pretty darn good and great for the price. I do know if you venture there they are directly accross from the Rain Forest resturaunt.

GOOD HUNTING

I happen to be selling a set of 4 barstools that have never been used (bought for a photo shoot). They're chrome with black vinyl, and I'm selling the set for $150.

If you'd like to see pix, let me know.

Wesco Kitchen and dining Furniture on Rt. 10 in East Hanover has a great selection and plenty of catalogs to order from. Not just traditional but modern styles as well.
