Would those of you who lease water softeners give me some idea of the initial outlay, monthly payments and cost of salt. Also if you could review the service provided by your leasing company, I would appreciate it. Thanks |

We use portasoft 908 233 4300 - we have quite a large unit and I think we pay either $21 or $23 per month to rent the unit. Cost of salt - well, you can buy cheaper in HD but I almost broke my back lifting the bags - it all depends on how much water you are going through in the house as to how much salt you get through. The 40lb bags in HD are about $4-5(?) and I think I pay a couple of dollars more for the equivalent with portasoft, but they do all the back breaking work and fill up the machine. |

Also portasoft: $170 to install, $23 a month to rent, first year's rental can go towards purchase if oyu decide to buy (I think it's about $1000), $70/year for salt including delivery and filling it up. We just installed it and it is amazing! Makes a big difference. Only thing is the unit is BIG, almost as big as the hot water heater (sits next to it in basement). |

What does the water softener do to the water? Makes things more soapy, right? Better for hair and skin? Is portasoft the only game in town? What does the water taste like? Jeff

Once a water softner is set-up, is there a lot of maintenance (outside of replacing the salt)? Do you need an area to drain water out of the softner, or can the unit be installed in closet? Thanks, |

We use Jayson and pay approx. $44.00 a quarter. I get the salt at ShopRite. Not sure what the initial cost would be as unit was already in our home when we purchased it. |

We use Jayson and get the salt at ShopRite as well. It's better to lease than own because the repairs do not cost you five arms and twenty legs. |

My initial thoughts on saltless water softeners: the "magnetic" kind are not adequate to deal with the water issues we face here, and as for the other types, $$$! It is also possible to use Potassium Chloride rather than Sodium Chloride in most "salt" water softening units, however I understand the Potassium Chloride costs approx 4x as much.
