I know there was a thread about this within the last year or so, but I can't find it.

Can anyone recommend someone who will do a nice job refinishing our wood door? It's a nice, custom door, but it's looking a little worse for the wear.

I used to do this myself. It was a chestnut faced oak door-- beautiful natural wood. I would remove all the hardware and sand it down with my belt sander. Then I would apply three coats of Flecto Varathane outdoor gloss (I found it to hold up better than polyurethane or spar varnish). I would do the shutters the same way. But when the house was sold, the new people painted both the door and shutters a miserable, plain grey. A sacrilege!

I can't do the work anymore, but any painter or a good handyman should be able to.

Thank you catman--

I can't do the work either. One place was suggested, but I can't see how we can remove the door and take it elsewhere. Definitely a custom door, so no chance of putting on a "temporary" door as a replacement while the door is refinished in a shop. Better to have someone come in and work on it, and put it back up for the night I guess. Is there another way?

Definitely sacrilege on the paint!! Our door is beautiful too, and I'd like to give it the care it deserves and show off the gorgeous wood grain.
