OK, when you move and buy a "used" house you do expect a surprise or two, uhm, make that three. First last Monday my wife calls me at the office and tells me that one of the garage doors isn't working. When I get home I check it and find that one of the springs has broken and that their are no safety cables on the two doors. Riseland Doors took care of this (two new springs, four safety cables, eight new pulleys and lubrication) for a pretty reasonable $149. I don't do garage door springs. They scare me. So I says to Mrs. K, "wow, we are pretty lucky, this is the first problem we have had, huh?" She agrees. Little did I know that I had just jinxed us. This morning I wake up and look out the kitchen window to find that a small decorative tree had fallen during the night. This wasn't a complete surprise since we picked up that the tree was in bad shape during the home inspection. However, we had put off doing anything about it because we liked the privacy if afforded. Next, I notice that it is a little warm and very humid in the house, so I check the brand new central air. It isn't working. I am posting this, basically, to kill time before 9:00am, which I consider a reasonable hour to call the AC contractor and our favorite tree guy, Paul from PJ Tree. I had my rainy Saturday all planned out. Now the plans have gone to hell in the proverbial handbasket. |

Just remember the taxes, Bob. It's all about the lower taxes... Say it like a mantra. |

I LOVE the little surprises that make my old house so special. I noticed a leak next to my fireplace and in my daughter's room. I thought that they were from the roof - which was on its last legs when we bought the place. I replace the roof, but the leaks remain. Turns out its the WINDOWS leaking. Argh! m |

We had a leaky ceiling in our kitchen. --thought it was the roof, replaced it. --still leaked. The wet spot got bigger --called our contracter, he is out of town for two weeks. --ceiling falls in right next to my hubby (thank goodness not on him) --contracter looks at it. Leaky pipe. --plumber comes, we need new plumbing upstairs altogether --contracter puts the ceiling back together --contracter goes to put our light fixture back, it catches fire --we now need new electrical Love my house

I had almost forgotten about it, but I will add on here...in our previous old home, not to be confused with our current old home, there was water damage evident in a small section of our kitchen wall and ceiling above that wall. We looked at it daily and agreed we should do something... well, one day it actually fell down - plop - while we were standing in the kitchen, almost on top of our now-deceased cat (not from that). It was actually pretty funny. |
