I'm trying to replace the lockset on my front door.
However, i can't get the old set out.
It's a Sargent & Co Mortise lockset. Probably as old as the house (1930's).
I got the inside and outside handle off, however I can't get the lock off. There seems to be a set screw on the side of the door, however that turns only a few turns to either side, it doesn't come out.

Any thoughts anybody? I don't want to have to resort to brute force, since that would probably only damage the door, but won't get out the lock.

Ok, so I got the lock out. After turning the set screw all the way counterclockwise (which made it go in), I could grab the lock with a vise grip and screw it out of the door.

Now I'm still left with the threaded door know holder. That's not coming out either. Again, any thoughts?

Okay, you figured out how to remove the lock cylinder. There should be two screws holding the lock unit in the side of the door, above and below where the set screws were for the cylinder. The door handles or knobs have to be removed first, as they go through the unit connected with a long square threaded bolt which also must be removed.

A word of caution: You may not be able to find a lockset that will fit in the same way and size. If the unit itself works, just replacing the cylinder with a comparable mortise one or having the existing one re-keyed might be necessary. The attached part on the back of the cylinder that turns is a unique size and shape for that lockset. Sargent has been out of business for more years than I am old, so if it can't be put on a new cylinder, re-key.

Another option is to fill in the space where the lockset comes out of with wood, and then re-drill, etc. for the new lockset.

Thanks cat,

yeah, I knew that I would have to fill in the mortise hole and re-drill the holes for the new handle and lockset. We bought the lockset 5 years ago when we bought the house. Had it all set up to use the same key as the back door.

But as things work out, I knew it would be a bit of a job, so it never happened till today (since we have the painters at our house right now and I want them to paint over all the old holes that I have to fill in.

So the last problem that I had was that square threaded bolt, that in my case didn't go all the way through. It only went half way through, and it took me quite a while to figure out how to get it out.
Turns out it's two halfs with one half being ankered in the lockset, and you can only pull it out after pulling out the other half. However they were stuck together and only once I used some force did they come apart.

Over all quite the project, one of those that you plan to take two hours and they take all afternon and the early night. And I still have the strike plates to do for tomorrow.
