Both my neighbor and I are having serious problems with starlings nesting in our roof soffits--droppings, noise, the works. They have even shown up inside my neighbor's house. Does anyone have any experience/advice here? Should we call Animal Control, or a roofer to screen up the openings, or an exterminator to put up deterents, or all three? Any recommendations for professionals in these areas? Thanks

Those baby birds will be gone before you know it, soon mom will be throwing them out of the nest and the nest will be empty. After it is empty you could remove it or have it removed and take the necessary measures to prevent it from happening again. I have a nest, and it doesn't bother me in the least, it is a temporary situation. Or if you hate animals, especially baby ones, you could get a gun and lock an load. Please get a grip. Not that big a deal.

You could call Buckingham Pest Control and get an opinion from Jerry. |

Sorry, bto, but it is a big deal. I'm glad you had a nicer experience that we are. How long is "before you know it?" We have been doing "watch and wait" for a month now and the nests are not empty yet. The many birds (not just one or two) who love out houses (you can count eight or more perching on the roofs) are leaving lots of droppings, staining our cars and siding. In a couple of occasions they worked their way into the house, and having birds trapped in your house dropping excrement all over while trying to safely get it out of your house is not fun. The cleanup was disgusting. I do not hate animals, just animal excrement in my house. You may have heard that excrement isn't very good for you. Last time I checked, shooting firearms in town is not legal. Jeeze, you can't even write a simple request for an exterminator and get a straight answer on this site. I think I will go back to my old habit of ignoring it completely. My research online was more helpful. Thanks for the sensible answer, Case. I have used Buckingham before. But it may be a roofer who will have to use a 40-ft ladder to mesh over the openings. Some subsequent research said to put urinal blocks in the soffits to discourage the nesting. That seems a fairly good way to discourage, but not hurt, the birds. |

We had a nest once, and loved it. It was such an amazing experience observing them and watching them grow. Do you have kids? They'll love it... try observing for a while, and after the hatching, put up a few locker mirrors... it freaks them out. But if you do it beforehand, the mother will probably leave the eggs to die. |
