I live in an old Victorian and have door knobs/lock mechanisms that I am trying to disassemble. For the life of me, however, I can not figure out how to take them apart. I know that many door knobs are held in place be a single screw or hex bolt, but that does not seem to be the case with my door knobs. There is a hole in the handle where it appears a screw could go, but none of the door knobs have a screw or bolt in this opening. Does anyone know how to take this type of door knob apart?

Here is a picture of the door knob...

And here is a picture of the hole in the handle...

Door Knob 2

Any ideas?

It has been my experience that it is about 50/50 that the set screw is allen or slot headed. A set of allen wrenches can be picked up for less than ten bucks at HD or a hardware store. After that, just unscrew the knob from the spindle.

The set screws are easy to lose and hard to find replacements so be careful.

Grab the knobs on both sides of the door and twist them both counterclockwise at the same time. They have a set screw but they are also on a square, threaded rod.

Monster / Bob - I'll go back and see if an allen wrench works.

Dennis - I had actually previously tried what you suggested with no success. I'm wondering if because the knob was painted it is now somehow stuck to the square rod.
