Hoping I can get some good advice. our shower is leaking (again) into kitchen ceiling. We re-caulked it a couple months ago which fixed the problem, but it is back. have a friend coming by tonight to take a look, but i can't really trust his opinion, so i was hoping you could give me some advice. this way I can see through his bs and try to get value from what he says. thanks, |

Sounds like either a problem at your corners, with water getting behind the substrate, and running down your framing,or more than likely,a bad shower pan, which is a more complicated and expensive problem. You might try plugging the shower drain[if you can remove the grate]with a big lump of plumbers putty wrapped in a washcloth and stuffed in the drain.Next, using a 5 gal. pail, fill the shower pan with water almost up to the curb.If it leaks, your problem is possibly the pan.If not, pull the washcloth out.If it leaks, your problem is possibly the drain.Either way,it sounds like your going to have to remove a section of your ceiling to access it and you might be able to make a better determination by starting there.Caulking should never be used as a first line of defense against water intrusion but if your just trying to buy some time,at least use silicone.Just make sure everything is totally dry before you caulk. |

Also, look behind the fixtures. You can ooch the the cover forward or unscrew it forward, and see the state of the seal there. This would, of course, cause leaking only during showers. J.B. |

We had the same problem. The tub faucet was corroded and water was dripping behind the tile through the bottom/rear of the faucet. No visible evidence in the bathroom but a big brown spot on the kitchen ceiling. Replaced the faucet and the problem stopped. FF |

I thought you were referring to a stall type shower with a mortar bed floor and wall system. While its true that water can sometimes get behind the escution[plate],they are usually high enough in showers that this does happen frequently.Keeping in mind Murphys Law,I would just try to do a process of elimination |
