I could really use some adice on where I can get shelves and drawers for a Self Installed closet. Here's what won't work: Closet Maids Home Depot Hold Everything Lowes It would seem that obtaining decent stuff is getting harder and harder to do without a professional installer marking you up 2000%.....All I want is 6 drawers, a couple rods and 4 shelves, but I don't want cardboard boxes imitating furniture either. Thanks for your help. I'd do a search for this on Home Fix it, but the search function on the board is pretty much dead...(anyone else unable to search on MOL?) |

My brother-in-law (a former contractor) bought some cool closet inserts at Ikea. I was excited about getting some for my house but my closets aren't deep enough (or, alternately, the doors aren't wide enough) for the pull-out shelves. Check their website first for dimensions--and to see whether it's what you're looking for. |

SJ, The July, 2006 issue of Consumer Reports has an article on closet systems. Their two top rated systems are from Rubbermaid (K-Mart) and Elfa (Container Store). The DIY California Closet System (available at Lowes I believe) isn't highly rated. These systems are designed for modern closets that are around 18 inches deep and five to nine feet wide, so installing them in a typical old house closet requires some thought and you are probably better off buying individual components than a pre-packaged system. |

We hired a closet guy "closets by glinsky" for our master closet and have been happy, but for my girls' room I didn't want to spend as much cash. Years ago, when it was our master BR, I installed a basic closetmaid 5-9 foot closet system, adjusted slightly. Over time I have added plastic drawers for each girl擁t's a tower I bought at Costco for about $30 with 6 drawers in it, holds their undies, socks, jammies, etc and it has functioned very well for several years. Now we realize we need more shelf space, so using predrilled supports and 48 inch shelves, we will take out one of the rods, move it to the other side to make a double rod, and have all shelves on the other side. In my younger daughter's smaller closet, we used cheap stackable storage towers on one side to hold sweaters , etc, and put a double rod on the other side, all from inexpensive shelving components found at Target or HD. Her closet is much smaller, only around 3 feet wide, but what we did really allows us to store much more in the space. If you dislike the melamine shelves, you can probably create the same type of thing using plywood or MDF, just measure it out and maybe look at some of the closet design sites for inspiration. I'm a huge believer in closet organizers, no matter what you go with, they can really make the most of space if you plan it out well. |

SJ - Look no further! I recently had a wall of closets built in our bedroom in your typical south orange victorian with one teeny-tiny closet large enough to hold my boxers. I found easyclosets.com which allows the user to enter the dimensions of the interior of the closet in question and design as you see fit. They ship for free from their factory about a half hour west on Rt 78. If you get frustrated with design program on their site, you can call in during business hours and have one of the designer get on the phone with you for assistance. I found it to be exactly what the doctor ordered. I'm not mechanically inclined and happened to have a contractor at the house doing some other stuff so I got him to build the closet for me too. |

My husband installed closet organizers from easyclosets.com in our previous house. They were easy to install and looked great. We'll be installing them in this house later this year. We highly recommend them. |

Is Easy Closets a Hanging system (from wall brackets?) What I'm most intrested in is the Drawers and the slides. I want something that feels somewhat sturdy, rather than the plastic discs and tracks that is on a lot of the cheap stuff. thanks! I'll hit the website now. |

Smarty, the system hangs. It's VERY sturdy. My husband installed them in 4 closets and we had no issues with them. They took the daily abuse of 3 boys and looked no worse for wear when we moved. We installed an Ikea set in another closet. It was fine for the use, but not as sturdy. |

Does the container Store offer Wood/Composite? My understanding was that it was only the Wire Hanging drawers? Am I missing something on why I should be doing Wire Drawers rather than Solid? |

Go with solid as opposed to wire. Container store might be good for those that can think clearly. I don't know. Maybe I've got too much on my brain, but I can't figure things out enough to go with stufdf from the container store. EC made it simple. They put everything in front of you from drawers to sliders shelves and hanging rods. Easy Closets is VERY sturdy. They use a wall mounted system which is said to support 1800 lbs. |

For what its worth,if you are handy you can build your own closet system. I found a great plan in a magazine (family handyman) and doubled it (to fit two sides of a walk in closet). My master closet is now beautiful; solid wood; beautifully stained; funky egg-shaped hanging bars; a mixture of shelves and drawers; and completely custom. Also, it cost a fraction of what it would have cost me to buy it elsewhere. |
