Ok, I'm good at choosing color, so I don't need help there... It's where to put the color in a room, an attic, which has three feet ceiling at top, then sloped ceiling to about 4' above the ground. In part of the room, the ceiling slopes into what I call a bed niche, which ends at just about 2'. Overall I think I'd like light neutrals, but also strong "accent" color(s) in a wall or somewhere. Is it ever good to put the stronger colors on the ceiling? I've seen shows lately that say saturated colors accentuate the sense of "depth" (i.e., roominess) in a room. Has anyone done anything daring in their attic?

Thanks.

Our MBR has a lofted ceiling and it's a really big rectangular room, with tons of sunlight. I wanted to keep it light and bright, but felt that when the ceiling slopes to the walls, if we painted the ceiling white it would slice the room in half vertically and make it seem much smaller. We went with a light gold (tannish-yellow) on the walls, a shade lighter on the ceiling and off-white trim. It's very subtle.

In other rooms of my house I complemented the wall color with a different ceiling color, broken up by cream crown moulding. I love that much more than white ceilings. For instance, in our dining room the walls are a soft, warm gray with off-white trim. We did the ceiling in a clay color, and it totally warms the space. If the ceiling was white it would look way too cool. Living room we did something similar, with deeper walls.

Also, a lot of times the line between walls and ceiling in an attic is pretty blurred, in which case keeping it all one color, with maybe an accent wall in a brigher or deeper shade, might work best.

Thanks, VIG. My hubby is big on "designer white" for the ceiling. I'll try to sway him. Your place sounds well thought out!

The best advice about painting your attic, buy a 24" inch roller from Ricciardi's. It makes the job so much faster.

We have a similar situation. Our master bedroom is on the second floor of a cape and has some sloping ceilings. While a big room, the ceilings are fairly low. We decided to go with a white ceiling. We were afraid that color, even light color, on the ceiling or even the sloped walls would make the room feel claustraphobic (sp?).

I imagine the attic described might have the same or similar issues issues.

The master suite at my old house was on the 3rd floor. We went with white ceilings & trim (semigloss on trim & built-ins, flat on ceilings)& had moulding installed where we wanted to start the "ceiling" on the sloping walls rather than trying to keep a straight paint line & it looked great. We actually painted the whole niche the color (we didn't have our bed there, but a dresser instead).

Other ideas for such a space:
We painted the whole bathroom one light color (& installed a sky light to make it feel roomier, which worked)

Also, we had a media niche (I know, TV in the bedroom is considered unromantic by some, but we like it) built into one of the knee walls accross from the bed...seemed pretty simple to construct; ran the electrical behind.

doulamomma: Interesting. So you put up like picture rail even on the sloped ceilings? Sounds cool.

PS: depends on what is ON the tv in the bedroom!

Shanabana,

Yes - very simple trim, done just where the slope started (5 or 6 ft?)
