At some point, I need one of these -- or slightly taller -- for over our stove. We have a 50's cape cod, and I'm fine with the plywood cabinets. But, would like one over the stove and to install a cabinet mount microwave (had this in previous house it was a space saver). Where do kitchen remodellers recycle old cabinets? Or, what's the best way to find one? Thanks. |

Cyn, I imagine you have the old 1950s cabinets with external hinge hardware and flat doors with a rounded over edge. If this is the case you can buy almost exact matches at Hanco on Route 10 or Raw Wood on Route 22 east in Hillside. They ain't all that cheap btw. I also imagine that some people have some in their garage left over from their kitchen remodel, but size is always an issue. |

sometimes you can get them directly from folks getting rid of such cabinets - one brand from the 50's was "St. Charles"...metal on inside, plywood on outside (there are some wacky original ads on ebay)...here's one place where you can buy/sell/trade: http://www.bobvila.com/BBS/St_Charles_brand_metal_kitchen_cabinets-Buy_Trade_or_ Sell-1-F58.html good luck! |

Cynical girl -- I installed an OTR micro -- without a cabinet. Instead made a support out of a 2x4, then put a "blank" piece of wood above the micro as a filler. With some imagination, you could easily make shelves, plate rack, etc. too if you can't get a cabinet. Pete |

Pete's idea is also good if you need to duct your M.W.outside.Really,you're just building a glorified soffet which can accomodate your duct and also support the front of the M.W..You could also put up a dummy door to match the others. |

You know, you guys are right. It could be a glorified soffit. It gets greasy enough in that zone that I'm not wild about an open shelf (hence the cabinet thought, and kept thinking maybe people just junked them when doing a remodel). Bob K's description is right on as to style, external hardware, etc. There is an exhaust fan, that pretty much needs to be replaced. I had been thinking cabinet, then microwave with hood thing with vent -- and of course considering low cost ways to achieve this schmeer. One modestly complicating factor (and one reason why I like the cabinets we have) is there's a rather attractive, deep crown molding sort of a thing above the current cabinets. I'd want to replicate, no matter what we end up doing. Appreciate the inputs. I'm trying to connive how I might facelift this kitchen cheaply this winter. Counter/backsplash/new sink, sheet vinyl floor (or the replace the selfstick squares that are on it presently as I can do this), the cabinet thing/microwave. These items would do a lot, and I can paint the rest. Husband had already replaced the tracks on a couple of the drawers. Some of the cabinets have closing issues, but that too seems DIY. |

We did a similar project: 1. Replace the hardware on the doors, including the hinges that are probably painted and causing the "closing issues". We used stuff from HD that has the look of brushed nickle. If you are going to do a good paint job, you have to remove the doors anyway. 2. If the counter is in good shape think about granite 12 x 12 tiles. They are often on sale and very reasonable. 3. While I have some issues with using laminate floors in kitchens and other potentially damp areas, they have become so cheap it is worth a shot. Follow the manufacturers instructions on sealing the edges near water sources such as the sink and dishwasher. |

I'm curious - how can I research the cabinet style in my 1932 cape cod? I too need cabinets but don't know what to look for...Thanks for the Bob Villa web site! |

I do not want to replace them - I need some more cabinets on the opposite wall and want to find and/or replicate them. Also looking to put in a new counter, new floor and an interior french door. Oh wise and wonderful Kitchen Guru - do you know someone who can do this work? |

Star, I am working on a major kitchen remodeling project now in Maplewood where the client is using someone who is doing a beautiful job of site-building cabinetry. I will ask him if it's okay to have you stop by and take a look. Perhaps he can do the rest of the job as well. You can email me at jahdesignr@aol so we can talk privately. I don't publish anyone's name without permission. As long a syou promise that you are not really a princess.

Star, Your apology is accepted, I did not see this before I responded to your post on th other thread. Again, I extend my offer to have you take a look at the cabinet builder's work if you email me privately. I now need to add, I have no personal/business interest in this. In my business I only provide factory-built cabinetry so this is just a goodwill gesture on my part. I am a resource person to my friends and family for lots of things, skin care, hair care product info, you name it,I just like to help others. K
