We'd like to install some new lights (track and recessed) in two of the rooms in our new house and change the vanities in the bathrooms. Do we need to worry about permits or can we get this work done without permits? Any input is greatly appreciated since we are new to this area. |

I'd say the lights yes, and the vanity and sink no, provided you are not changing the location or piping arrangement. Here is a guide (the state regulations) as they pertain to existing house. work.http://www.state.nj.us/dca/codes/rehab/index.shtml |

When in doubt, get a permit, or atleast call town hall. It will save you grief in the long run if you cover all your bases. |

My experience is this..... when in doubt get a permit. But beware! When you arrive at town hall you can count on someone very rude and curt take care of you - in any department. It is almost like they don't want to be inturupted or bothered. It's very sad. For what reason do they act like this? Not sure, but I have my thoughts on this.I just want to obtain a legal permit (something many in this town DO NOT DO) for home improvements. Frankly, they work for me. I help pay their salary and I pay taxes ... and I get treated like dirt! It just doesn't make any sense ... but that is a Bureaucracy in action! |

Funny, my experiences with the Building Department has always been the opposite. Everyone from the support staff through Bob Mittermier have been helpful, knowledgeable and efficient. But then I usually smile when I go there and treat the people like, well, people, not some sort of servant, public or otherwise. |

Doesn't matter how you go in there smile or not. They should still act like they want to do their job. Maybe they are more inclined to have a better attitude towards those they see more often - like builders and contractors? Still stating the facts ... this "smiley happy face" went in 3 times and got treated poorly. I get treated poorly when I go to renew the parking pass and sometimes get a smile back from the tax collector!

I've been to the building office 4 or 5 times. Bob Mittermayer is ALWAYS great to work with; very helpful and all in all just a nice guy. Some of his staff, though, are truly pains in the . Being polite doesn't really seem to help too much - its usually an unpleasant experience. |

I thought that if you were merely replaceing what's there, like cabinets or vanities, you would not need a permit. I would check though. That said, I redid the entire bathroom with no location changes and did not get a permit. Didn't even inquire. (But don't tell anybody, ok!?) |

Shanabana, is that "Lady with an Ermine," the finest easel painting ever made and the most unsung of Da Vinci's works? |
