I'm slowly trying to search for recs, but thought I'd ask as well. Moving to the area soon, have one room of wall-to-wall carpeting that needs to be cleaned, and we are bringing 2 area rugs (nothing fancy/antique) that need to be cleaned (life is tough with a toddler ).

We've never used one of those rent-a-cleaner vacuum things, nor have we ever hired anyone (we've always lived with dirty carpets, I guess ). Have no clue what the general cost is, or where to start looking. Any information on renting and DIY, or local services that will come to the house and clean them for us, is GREATLY appreciated!!

If you've got toddlers, I'd recommend buying a Bissell or similar carpet cleaner with the heating element on board. I had one for our last house, which which largely wall to wall. Invaluable purchase. I used it every couple of months in most rooms, and sometimes more frequently in the high traffic areas (it was light carpet). Makes things smell good, feel good, look good. Plus, you'd be surprise how much of the stuff that spills doesn't really get picked up when you do the odd blot action.

Do get one with that heats/makes steam on the appliance itself.

Yes, you can rent the cleaners but they tend to be bulkier than what you can buy. You might want to, for the first round before you move in, get all the rugs cleaned professionally. Thereafter, do it yourself. The cost of the appliance will pay for itself in nuisance of renting, transporting, bulkiness, etc.

I've always rented Rug Doctors. Seem to work really well. Costs $22 or so a day, plus extra if you want the "upholstery attachment" or the extra-wide model. Add in the cost of the special detergent they use ($7-15, depending on the size), and it's a pretty good deal.

The new Lowes rents them, as do many nearby supermarkets.

As for the area rugs, I'd take them to a good local cleaners to shampoo and make any necessary repairs. Never had any area rugs cleaned, so I can't give any recommendations, but I wouldn't shampoo them in place. (Most are too thin, and the water will run right through onto your floors.)

I use Greco Carpet Cleaning (908) 233-2130

(in fact they are coming Monday morning) Minimum charge is something like $75.95 and they charge $5 per step for stairs. They often offer several room "specials" and then they try to jack up the cost when they are in your home by charging for Scotchguard treatment which is not worth it IMO. I pay for pretreating and regular wash.

They also do upholstery.
