Has anyone bought a mantel locally? I went to Home Depot but could not find anything there. Is there such a thing as a mantel store..?
Ofcourse, I need it quickly and not too expensive!

Many thanks

Google "fireplace mantels". There appear to be a lot of mailorder alternatives. Inaddition, fireplace shops such as the one in Summit carry mantels, but I imagine they are pricey.

If you didn't want an antique, then it could be built for you on the premises using different overlays of wood and trims (which is how they go together) then placing a large mantel top (which is sold separately) then adding more trim.

Not wanting to advertise (no really) but Rich at Honey Do has the capability and talent to do this for you. Find a picture of one you might like and he can probably reproduce it for you at your home.

It took a while (sorry about that J.C.) but he reproduced two large windowboxes for an MOL contributor. You can view the boxes if she agrees.

Home Depot used to have them in a strange place. It took me forever to find them, finally did but were a lot more $$ than I was looking to spend at the time.

We used same crown molding in our kitchen to build the mantle on the kitchen fireplace. It looks really cool. I can't compare the cost to buying a matle or building one from scratch.

Thanks for the hints. So I've discovered there's no such thing as a quick cheap mantle.

For future mantel hunters....Jaeger Lumber can order, Home Depot on Rt 10 will do a special order or there's a Hearth store way out on Rt 10 who will measure order and fix. They all take 2-3 weeks.

Mantelsdirect.com looks more cost effective if you can use a tape measure.

Lowes has much more in this regard than Home Depot -- prefab mantels in various sizes and styles. (starting at ~$200).

For something more substantial, custom, check with Rich (Honey Do)

Does anyone have contact info for Rich at "Honey Do"? I googled, but did not find.

Of course I can't find Rich's # right now. PL Sherri (above) she manages all the appointments anyway, so you may as well go straight to the "top".

This is probably a bit late, but Rockler also does mantles (as well as a whole other bunch of interesting woodworking stuff). Looks like they have a lead time of about 2-3 weeks as well.

we had great luck with
www.hazelmeremantel.com
discussed measurements over the phone and received the mantel via DHL in a couple weeks and it fit perfectly! By the way they can also customize your mantel. We liked the legs of one and the top of another and he built it for us.
good luck!
