If you need a plumber, Corragio Brothers are great! OTOH, Ronnie is not a plumber, he's great at drain opening and such, which I've used him for, but hes not a licensed plumber (he will do "plumbing" though). /p |

F.Y.I. It is currently a disordery persons offense to do plumbing work without a license. Legislation is underway to make it a class 4 felony as it is with electrical work. Every time an unlicensed contractor is endorsed on this public forum he is being exposed to possible administative scrutiny. |

Carly, I'm sure you already got your plumbing problem repaired by now, but I'm postings this message so that consumers can be made aware of the pitfalls that "may" await them if they don't hire wisely. If you are looking to get plumbing or electrical work done in your home, it can only be done by licensed contractors. Can you find an un-licensed contractor to do the same thing and save a few bucks in the process?? Sure you can. The problem is that you are potentially playing with fire!! If the contractor burns, floods, electrocutes you, or causes your house to fall down, you have zero recourse!! You can, (well you can, but you can't win) sue, but if the contractor isn't licensed and insured for that specific specialty, their insurance company will not cover the claim, and neither will yours, because, If you bring an unscrupulous contractor into your home and they cause damage, the law does not protect you. If the contractor says their licensed, check, say, "may I see it", they must produce it. If you ask for a certificate of insurance, this doesn't come from them but from their carrier. I've been noticing alot of posters recommending a certain sewer cleaner, who by the way is advertising illegally on this board. For most of us, our homes are the biggest purchase we've ever made, why then put it in peril by hiring an un-licensed, un-bonded, and un-insured (at least for providing plumbing services) into are homes and in fact put our biggest investment at risk. If you don't believe me, just check with the Board of Examiners of Master Plumbers (or electrical contractors). They are located at 124 Halsey Street, 6th Floor, Newark, New Jersey, (973) 504-6420, PO Box 45008, Newark, NJ 07101. It is in fact a disorderly persons offense to provide such services without the proper licensure. Under NJSA 45:14C-12.3. The violation and civil penalty (under 45:1-25) says that the first offense is $2,500.00 and each one after that is $5,000.00. Not to mention (if their caught working in YOUR house) you now get a visit from the local code enforcement inspectors to bring said work into compliance. All in all most code officials get a bad rap (some of them for good reason) but they ARE there to not only protect you, BUT to protect the people who ultimately buy your home from you. I can only say in their defense that you would of WANTED them to of been involved in this process of a home you potencially would (or possibly one of your children) would purchase. Be smart, Be safe, and above all check licensing and insurance. And least we not forget those dreaded permits. If you need additional info, just ask, but if not, here's a link to consumer affairs. Good Luck! And I apoligize to such a long post and no spell check. http://www.nj.gov/lps/ca/boards.htm |

A recently convicted individual was fined (and paid) $12000. People who engage in this type of risk taking behavior usually have enough problems in thier lives without consequences like that. |

I find it interesting that people will pay $80,000+ for a car but will let some unlicensed hack put their million dollar home in jeopardy, just to save a few bucks, and then they cry,, we we we we all the way to their homeowners insurance company. Wake Up! Many homeowner insurance companies are starting to hire UCC licensed inspectors (in New Jersey that is) to investigate these same fraudulent claims. When will our sewer cleaner friend (and his friends who he seems to have bamboozled) find the cubes to re-butt my claims. Hiring these un-licensed contractors drags us all down and must be stopped! Anyone? |

Robert and Dennis - you've got WAY too much time on your hands, guys. Now we know who you work for. I've used Gateway and didn't really think they were the Second Coming, as so often is alluded to on this site. Rushed in, rushed out, 100% charm-free, then charged me a fortune. |

wunderdog, I do not work for Gateway (I don't believe I've ever met him or Mr. O'Neill). It would seem as if I worked for (or at least had a partner in the insurance business though). My liability and workmans comp was over $150,000 last year. I'm finding it very difficult to compete, and to be (insurance)audited every quarter and still have time to run a business. It takes alot of time and money to run a business legally. I'm only trying to raise awareness about the pitfalls of hiring un-licensed contractors. The old saying, "you get what you pay for" still rings true. I've NEVER been sued, and I've NEVER submitted a claim to my carrier yet they bang me 15% and the number will probably go higher next year. True, a little roach like our sewer cleaner friend doesn't impact my business at all, but he does impact alot of small local residential legit contractors, and if you combine that with all the other hacks that aren't so brazen as to illegally advertise a licensed service on this board, then we wouldn't have to charge so much. Think about it. By the way, what business are you in? |

Likewise, don't work for Gateway nor do I know Mr. O'Conner. Sorry to beat a dead horse on this license issue. It's been a frustration for years for those of us who are legit. They are just now taking beginning steps at enforcement. You had better believe that if someone were practicing law or medicine without a license, the swat team would have thier house surrounded and the police helicopters would be landing on thier roof in about 5 minutes time. The point I've been trying to make is that I don't see how it helps an individual who is breaking the law to be outed for such on MOL. |
