I have a 1940s bathroom done in speckled "mustard" color 4.5 inch ceramic tile, with "chocolate" brown trim tile. I need to make a few minor alterations to the bathroom (new medicine cabinet) and therefore need a few spare pieces of tile and trim. Any suggestions of where I could get it? I tried World of Tile on Route 22 w/o success . . . |

If World of Tile doesn't have it you might be s*it out of luck. That place is where old tile goes to die. Megna TIle in Bloomfield did our bathroom and he was pretty confident about trying to "match" tile. We ripped it all out and started over, so I never saw his showroom (wainscotting instead). Could be worth a look. J.B. |

Is there a place in your bathroom where you could "borrow" some tiles? Maybe behind a sink or something. You could also maybe scatter a few decorative tiles within the design and use those in the necessary places. |

You might want to check on eBay. We went to World of Tile to find replacement subway tile for our original 1929 bathroom. $6 a tile was the cheapest they quoted. Went on eBay and found several options, including a NYC contractor who hauls most of the tile from his demos to his house in Yonkers. We were able to go to Yonkers with one of our tiles and match it - never knew there were quite so many different shades of white. We had a huge shopping bag filled with tile for $25 - a major savings from World of Tile. |

We plan to redo our bathroom back to retro 1920s-30s in keeping with the age of our house: subway tile, old style fixtures, etc...mwnewbie can you post pictures of your original bathroom? You are lucky to have it....so many have been taken out. I have heard of that website, they have great stuff....very sad to think of all the historic houses that have been lost to the wrecking ball (especially now, that's a whole thread by itself), but al least the fixtures have been saved. We plan to salvage our fixtures that we are replacing with the historic ones....I hate to waste something that can still be used. |
