Well, my curiosity clearly exceeds my patience. Waiting and seeing would clearly answer this question, but in the meantime, what purpose is going to be served by the chalk lines (and grooves in the pavement) that go perpendicular to the traffic flow on the newly paved secions of Valley Street?? They're way too close to each other to be crosswalks, and even the ones that are parallel seem strange if they're going to be traffic or bicycle lane markers...can anyone shed light on this for the curious and ignorant among us?? |

I have a feeling they are carving expansion creases into the pavement. It's normally done with concrete, but Maplewood and Essex County are the only places where I've seen this practice with asphalt. Sounds like a waste of taxpayer dollars if you ask me. |

Thanks, and tee-hee. I'm curious now as to what responses will be coming in on other secions of the Message Board... |

I agree with TB, I think its for expansion. Driving along the lines just don't make sense for painting as they shift in many places a few feet left to right as you're driving down the road. Look for a machine that will come along and cut a narrow slit in the pavement and immediately fills it in with a tar based sealant. |

As posted elsewhere, the lines represent where there are expansion joints in the concrete sub-base below the asphalt.A saw cut will be made to serve as a control joint and to keep the expansion joint from telegraphing through and eventually cracking the asphalt. |

Won't water get in there in the winter and cause freeze/thaw damage? |
