Has anyone had Home Depot install replacement windows recently? Apparently they now have their own crews as opposed to subcontracting, so I'm only interested in responses from those who've done it this new way. And if anyone has had the Simonton windows installed I'd be interested in hearing what you think of them. Thanks! |

The simonton window is a lower to middle range window, and as far as the "their own crews statement" all I can say is those words resound SUB-CONTRACTORS, why don't they use there own trained employees? I will guarantee at best they might have magnetic signs when installing the windows. To find out more call home depot in corporate office in Georgia, and ask them if they employ ANY actual window installers in New Jersey, other than the sub-contractors through each store. Home depot in this area uses RMA, Sears uses Mark Four in Livingston, they in turn sub-contract to other smaller companies. I know that sears is going to be subcontracting still, but will be discontinuing the use of Mark Four as the sales orginazation at the end of this year. I will say,, I guess when a company is as large as they are this is the only way to find enough people to try and keep up with the demand. It is however pot luck on who you get to install your windows, good luck. |

Windowman isn't blowing his own horn. A coworkers son is a small remodeling contractor on Staten Island who from time to time works as a subcontractor for the window contractor HD uses in that area and in NJ. He tries to avoid doing so, but sometimes he needs the work. Nobody wants to know about problems and the fee he gets is starvation level. |

Well, what you've both said is antithetical to what they've told me so maybe I'll try corporate. They said they used to use subcontractors but now they use their own employees. The guarantees they offer on the product and the installation are certainly appealing after complaints I've seen on this board of window installers going out of business or not finishing jobs completely. I believe the Simonton was very well rated by Consumer Reports. Maybe that doesn't really mean anything though. |

Remember also Consumer Reports is an Invited report not even 5% of the windows out there have representation in there surveys. Be carefull you are on the dis-information highway.... |

I would get Tico's to install windows that you can order from Lowe's or HD. I got Pellas and they installed them wonderfully and quickly. |

Jaeger Lumber just faxed me their list of 10 contractors that they direct people, on window Installations. It's a comprehensive list, you can get a couple of estimates (and pick one you are comfortable with) and Jaeger will provide you with a well priced estimate for any number of window lines you might be considering. We've used them a few times, and it's all been very smooth, reasonable. |
