--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am planning on getting blow in insullation performed on my house. The contractors either a)drill holes in the clapboard siding, when complete seal with plugs and spackle, or b)take off an entire piece of clapboard, put it back on when complete.

I'm getting the house painted once this is finished anyway

I'm worried about the look of the plugs vs the likeihood of completing breaking some of the clapboards and needed to spend money on getting them replaced.

Any comments from people that have had this job done with cedar clapboard siding. I know that cedar shake is easier because you have to take off less siding and replacing is easier. Thanks

Jeff

Jeff,

NEVER drill holes in clapboard! First off, no matter what its going to look like garbage. If you want a good example of just how bad it can look, go over to Bunny's restaurant in South Orange and walk on the side that leads you to the parking lot in the back. I cringed when I saw the plugs.

The only way to do it is to remove the entire piece very carefully, then fill the cavities. If you drill holes and spackle you're going to create new ways for water to get in. Don't do it! Replace the clapboards if necessary. Its minor in expense compared to what could happen years down the road.

I believe in the most recent This Old House, or the issue right before, Tom Silva shows how to properly replace an entire piece of clapboard.

Good luck.

I'll second what darren says...do it properly. It can't be that much of a cost difference relative to the entire insullation job even if some of the clapboards do need to be replaced.
